BULK SMS: Applying of Bulk SMS System to Enhance Educational Communications

Abstract
While SMS (Short Message Service), a text messaging service, elicits the appeal of instantaneous communication by using mobile technology to send a text message to anyone anytime and anywhere, bulk SMS system has expanded that capability of SMS by implementing the ability to easily send multiple SMS messages to intended recipients with reliability. The advantages of bulk SMS can be applied in schools and universities to further develop classroom interactions and set up a virtual community as a public relations system. Lecturers can conduct mobile quizzes in many question forms with their students via SMS. Moreover, bulk SMS system provides an information service such as sending special announcements, news and interest information for lecturers, students and other related recipients. This paper presents the B-SWU system, Srinakharinwirot University’s dynamic bulk SMS system, which capitalizes text messaging service by allowing students to pose and respond to questions immediately. In terms of academic information and public relations, the system retrieves student’s interest information, such as admission announcement, university’s news and events, enrollment information, internship opportunity and grade results, from the university’s e-service systems and distributes it to registered users. The goal of this research is to develop a system which applies a range of technologies including mobile and web technology that improve, supplement and support student’s learning and public relation via wireless communication.

           Introduction
Classroom interactive activity is an important learning technique which supports active learning environment by providing instant feedback and promoting student motivation (Scornavacca and Marshall, 2007). However, interactive activity in physical classroom has proven to be quite difficult and inefficient in large classes (Freeman and Blayney, 2005). When the teacher asks a question, not all of the students can response. Responses from some students only cannot guarantee the comprehensions of the whole class.
Therefore, the idea of developing a virtual classroom has been introduced for solving this problem. Web-based learning is a prior technology which supports various class sizes and provides an opportunity to communicate from remote sites. While web technology was wildly implemented, wireless technology has been growing rapidly. Txoday, mobile phone seems to be a necessary device of life. It can be an alternative way to conduct an educational communication. Comparing to web-based learning, mobile technology provides more effective and flexible communication in a timely manner. Thus, mobile phone can be applied for learning (Capuano, Gaeta, Miranda and Pappacena, 2004).

One simple and popular service offered in every GSM mobile phone is SMS (Short text Message Service). SMS is raising the importance of instantaneous   communication, reaching every mobile user with inexpensive cost. In fact, SMS can be packaged in bulk for sending to multiple users at one time. The bulk SMS system also gives a considerable discount and can be written-sent from a computer. With benefits of bulk SMS system, we can apply this system to enhance educational communication. In terms of education, the system can be applied to conduct a feedback system for a large class. Furthermore, it can be applied to send quizzes in forms of multiple choices, true/false, ranking and matching questions to multiple mobiles at one time. If the question needs more detail about a particular entity, SMS can be used to conduct the open-ended question which requires short answer or keyword answer.

In terms of academic information and public relations, bulk SMS can provide a more flexible and effective way to reach the lecturers, students and other related receivers anytime and anywhere. In order to provide privacy, only registered users will receive interest information such as university’s news and events, enrollment information, internship opportunity and grade results.

This paper presents the B-SWU system: Srinakharinwirot University’s dynamic bulk SMS system. The objective of this paper is to develop our own education services based on bulk SMS system to support our student’s need of information. By applying bulk SMS system, students can get the information faster and easier.
